WELCOME TO THE STIWT THEATRE...

Domineering the Rhosllanerchrugog skyline since 1926

A home for arts, entertainment and community engagement, this theatre has it’s roots firmly in the mining heritage of the Wrexham area. Built by the Miner’s Welfare Organisation, which gives the unique name of ‘Stiwt’, short for Institute, who levied 1p a tonne of extracted coal in the harsh years of the depression between 1924-1926. The meagre wages of the miners also spared 2p per week to ensure the operation was supported.

Since opening on 25 September 1926, The Stiwt Theatre has known many successful days. That is until 1977 when the building closed its doors and the theatre began a period of demise, mirroring that of the mining industry. Now a Grade II listed building, after being considered for demolition due to falling into disrepair, The Stiwt Theatre went through a huge milestone in its history. 3,000 people came to wave goodbye to their beloved theatre and instead pledged to rejuvenate the building to find a new successful path.

The Stiwt Arts Trust Ltd was formed, a board of trustees empowered to ensuring this Theatre thrives for years to come. With a programme of theatre, musicals, comedy, and tribute acts to serve the Wrexham area and far beyond, The Stiwt Theatre aims to be a leading place of excellence. There are plans that this will be a house of training for various disciplines within the theatre industry including a programme of events aimed at developing new talent. Community groups routinely call this Theatre their home where the Welsh language is taught in workshops, crafts are made and songs are sung, all designed to homogenise our wonderfully collaborative community.

The Stiwt Theatre welcomes all backgrounds to come learn and play, to celebrate and be entertained. Drop by for a visit or book for our next shows and see for yourself what a fabulous theatre and community we have.
